Welcome to my blog, Where I share insights and experiences as a mother raising boys with a wide range of knowledge around health, nutrition, childcare and many other areas. Being a mom is a rewarding journey, and it brings unique challenges when it comes to raising active and healthy children. In this first blog post, I want to shed light on the importance of instilling good habits related to well balanced healthy lifestyle in our kids from an early age. So, let's dive in!
1. Embracing an Active Lifestyle:
Physical activity is crucial for the overall development of children it not only leads to better physical health but it is proven to have a significant impact on your child's Mental, Emotional and Social health also instilling tools that better equip them for later in life. Encouraging our children to engage in sports, outdoor activities, and regular exercise not only improves their physical strength but also enhances their cognitive abilities, social skills, and emotional well-being. From backyard games to organized sports, there are endless opportunities to keep our boys and girls active and energized. Make the outdoors a significant part of your family's daily life in so many ways.
2. Building Healthy Habits:
Nurturing children with healthy habits sets the foundation for a lifetime of well-being. Teaching them the importance of regular sleep patterns, maintaining good hygiene, and staying hydrated are essential aspects of their overall health. Additionally, limiting screen time and encouraging them to engage in hobbies that promote mental stimulation are key in fostering their personal growth. teaching them to respect and take care of their surroundings and belongings prepares them for their future responsibilities. A mother's job is give her children all the tools they need to become a functioning productive member of society with a strong foundations to build their future on, although with boys that can a look alot like learning how to use the toilet properly without a wet sock having to be your wake up call until their mid teens and beyond I'm sure.
3. The Power of Nutrition:
Proper nutrition plays a pivotal role in supporting the growth and development of our children. As mothers, we have the responsibility to provide balanced meals that are rich in essential nutrients. Incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats into their diet ensures that they receive the necessary vitamins and minerals to thrive. By instilling healthy eating habits early on, we empower our children to make informed food choices as they grow older.
4. Meal Planning and Prep:
In our busy lives, meal planning and preparation can be a game-changer. By dedicating time to plan nutritious meals and snacks in advance, we can ensure that our families have access to wholesome options throughout the day. Involving them in the process of selecting recipes, grocery shopping, and even helping with meal prep can foster their interest in cooking and empower them to make healthier choices. Involve your children in the preparation process makes them more likely to enjoy the food, whether it’s growing their own vegetables or helping preparing an easy meal for the family. It was one of the things I personally liked to carve out time to do with my boys from a young age ( pro tip: not when everyone is hangry and has had a long day), I always said if a boy should learn how to do anything in the home it should be at the (very least) the ability to feed himself and Others?! And let me tell ye now there is no better feeling then your teenage son appearing in front of you with the offer of a late night homemade snack.
5. Leading by Example:
As mothers, we have a tremendous influence on our children's behaviors and choices. By prioritizing our own health, nutrition and over-all wellbeing we become role models for our young boys and girls, They observe our actions, and when they see us making conscious efforts to take care of ourselves, they are more likely to adopt similar habits. So, let's lead by example and show them the power of self-care. Show self- love in front of your children and try avoiding self criticism and criticism of the other parent also, Our children usually have the same features or mannerisms as us and the flaws you verbalise they may mimic as the grow older for our sake as well as theirs speak kindly about ourselves especially when they're little ears are listening, when I find myself being negative I try to ask myself if I would say that to a person I truly love and value?! if I wouldn't say it to my loved ones why would I even think it about myself! Focus on your wins, take your losses on the chin and learn from them, teaching your child that is ok to fail it’s part of life. We often want to protect our child from the hard things but showing them how to deal with these hurdles in a healthy way is just as important. It's okay to feel down, overwhelmed stressed or unhappy it's what we do about it after we've had a good cry, that's really what matters it's a normal part of life but one we don't talk about enough. I've fought through days with tears in my eyes going to bed at night but so far I've always gotten back up the next morning and tried again, We are human and our babies need to see that.
Empowering our children with knowledge and understanding of their physical, emotional, mental and social health/needs and the importance of overall well being, is a journey that requires patience, understanding, education, dedication and love. By embracing an active lifestyle, building healthy habits, emphasizing proper nutrition, and leading by example, we empower our youth to live their best lives. By talking to our children about the hard things we don't increase the chances of them doing something they shouldn't do but instead we give them the tools they need to navigate their way through life and the option to ask for our guidance, help or support when they need it.
