DIET... A word we all dread and most look at as punishment... But your "diet" is vital at a time when your health is your wealth.
Some foods boost your immune system and give it a little kick to get it going, build those "goodies". Foods you eat can not only improve your immune system, But can help improve your mood and your over all well being. We all need a little pick me up at a time like this.
1. Vitamin C
is top of the list and probably one most people already know, it is thought to help with the body's production of white blood cells which in turn helps the body fight infections and viruses. You can find many different forms of vitamin C tablets or citrus fruits such as grapefruit, lemons, oranges and lime are a great way to include it into your diet daily. It also helps your body absorb Iron vital for good health. Also give a baby or young child a slice of lemon or orange to suck on can be a great way to get some extra goodness aswell as exploring new tastes and textures. Just be mindful of the skin as it can be difficult to chew.
2. Garlic
Nope not your garlic dip you got with your dominos pizza😉 but the cloves or garlic granules added to that nice homemade stew or bolognese, even finely chopped Raw Garlic on toast with butter daily can have great benefits, Garlic is one I include in my family diet all year round, Garlic is an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal food as well as having many other benefits, but antiviral is what we need to be including into our diet daily this help fight colds and flu. Can also be taken in tablet/capsule form.
3. Your Greens
Spinach, Kiwi, Asparagus, Kale, Avocado, Broccoli or Bok Choy.
These give you loads of vital vitamins and minerals that help boost your mood as well as your immune system and are easy to include in your daily diet. Green vegetables are known to be rich in essential vitamins and minerals playing a vital role in helping to regulate your immune system.
4. Seaweed
is full of iron antioxidants and other essential vitamins and minerals that help balance your body's hormones which makes it a "good mood food". why not have a sushi night?!
5. Ginger
is a natural pain relief helping with liver function as well as other vital functions of the body it is also something you need very little of to get the benefits adding it into your diet whether it be ginger tea or a ginger extract it is something you should try to include.
6. Cloves
have quite a strong taste and many people won't them include in anything they eat. But a small amount of ground cloves added to your cooking may spice it up a little but will give your immune system a vital kick as well.
7. Sugar is the enemy,
I know not what people want to hear, but it attacks the good cells as much as any virus would. It prevents the body from doing its job. That's where raw cocoa comes into it, a natural antioxidant that helps rid the body of toxins and also improves your mood. It can be used to replace chocolate when baking or I make a "hot coco'' using raw cocoa shavings instead of hot chocolate, Some can find it slightly bitter but the benefits out way the taste and there are fruits or sweetener alternatives to sugar such as honey or rice syrup that can be added to drinks and in baking that also benefit the immune system.
8.Vitamin D or the "sunshine vitamin"
as its often called is also vital for your immune system and a little mood booster, because we don't get a lot of sun in Ireland there has been many studies done on the benefits living in sun has on a person's mood versus living in a climate like ours. It's a vitamin we need very little of to feel the benefits but we also notice the lack of vitamin D more than you would believe, I would recommend a vitamin that may have it added to it in trace amounts for this time as we aren't getting out and active as much as we normally would but it is advised to not take a lot as it is easy to overdose and you really don't need a lot. This is why I try to include it through Foods like seafood and oily fish, mushrooms or egg yoke all are rich in vitamin D as well as food such as milk and cereal are fortified with it. It helps keep your energy levels high as well as fighting against disease.
9. Smoothies Or Shakes
yes I know many people think Yuk when they think of drinking a smoothie of thick green grass-tasting guck. But you can make a smoothie with all your favourite fruits blackberries, blueberries, cherries, raspberries, banana, and watermelon are just a few examples then add a little celery or spinach, wheat grass, natural yoghurt, honey, peanut butter, raw oats or raw cocoa or some almond milk, think bright vibrant colours when choosing fruits and vegetables as these are rich in all your essentials.
This list is just some tips and everything should be taken in moderation we would never give nutrition advice individually without knowing a persons full dirtary requirements please don't take this post as that
Including a few of these foods or supplements into your everyday diet will help prepare your body to better fight off any colds and flu this season, it will also give you a way to strengthen your immune system for when the upcoming holiday seasons when you will be attending more social gatherings and the weather is damp and cold. Why not use this time to expand your senses and try something new, find ways to get your kids involved and visualise your body producing all those "goodies" ready for battle should the need arise.
